Transitional Kindergarten
—Gan Chaverim
What Is Transitional Kindergarten (TK)?
Our Transitional Kindergarten, often called TK or a “Young Fives” program, is called “Gan Chaverim” which is Hebrew for “Garden of Friends.” It is a unique program that bridges the year for children who have completed Pre-K but aren’t quite ready for a full kindergarten experience. Designed for children with late-summer birthdays, or for families who feel one more year in a smaller, nurturing setting would help, Gan Chaverim offers a blend of kindergarten-level academics and the warmth and support of preschool. It truly becomes a remarkable year of growth for the students in a small class with individualized teaching. It’s not repeating Pre-K—it’s moving forward at the right pace.
Is TK Right for My Child?
If your child just turned five, has a late birthday, or seems academically ready but could use more time for confidence and maturity, you’re not alone in considering this choice. TK is ideal for:
- Children with late-summer or fall birthdays
- Kids who would benefit from a gentler transition into elementary routines
- Families who value another year of small classes and strong teacher relationships
Our teachers understand this important decision and are here to support your family every step of the way.
A Curriculum That Moves Forward—Not “Holding Back”
TBOP’s Gan Chaverim is a NAEYC-accredited kindergarten that gives children the gift of time (time to learn, time to grow, time to develop the confidence needed for the next steps in their educational journey). Children’s individual needs are met in a small class (1:8 teacher to student ratio with a maximum of 15 students with a lead teacher and an assistant) and a calmer environment where they are the oldest of the school yet mature at a developmentally appropriate pace. Children continue advancing in literacy (using Letterland phonics, just like Wake County schools), expand their early math skills (number composition, patterns, simple addition), and dive into deeper projects in science, art, and creative writing. The learning is purposeful and tailored—never “more of the same.”
- Kindergarten-Level Academics:
Focus on phonics, sight words, writing, early math, and hands-on science - “Learning How to Learn”:
Practice with longer lessons, group projects, and simple “homework” to build stamina for elementary school - Leadership & Confidence:
Opportunities to lead class activities, help with school events, and buddy with younger students
Why Choose TK?—The “Gift of Time”
Transitional Kindergarten is a five-day-a-week program that allows children to mature emotionally, socially, and academically. TK kids at TBOP gain:
- More confidence and self-regulation
- Stronger peer relationships
- Leadership skills and responsibility
- The ability to master kindergarten routines in a smaller, caring setting
Many parents call it “the gift of time.” Kids leave TK not just ready for kindergarten—they’re eager, self-assured, and prepared to thrive.
Comparison: TK vs. Pre-K and Kindergarten
Q: Is TK just a repeat of Pre-K?
A: No—TK is a distinct program with a more advanced curriculum, deeper projects, and more emphasis on independent skills.
Q: Will my child be bored in TK if they’re academically strong?
A: Not at all. Teachers differentiate instruction, so kids continue progressing while building confidence and focus. Many graduates of our Gan Chaverim program will confidently go into first grade and thrive.
Q: How does TK compare to kindergarten in public schools?
A: TK at TBOP offers the same literacy and math foundations as public K, but in a smaller, supportive environment—with lots of one-on-one attention and fewer transitions during the day.
Results—Leaders for Kindergarten and Beyond
After Gan Chaverim, TBOP kids enter kindergarten or first grade (depending on readiness and age) with the maturity, confidence, and academic skills to excel. Many become classroom leaders—teachers and parents regularly remark on their smooth adjustment and ability to thrive from day one.
