A Play-Based Day Built for Two-Year-Olds

Two-year-olds are full of energy, opinions, and curiosity—and our Twos class is designed just for that stage. At Temple Beth Or Preschool, we channel toddlers’ natural drive to explore into meaningful, joyful learning. This is the age of “I can do it myself” and big emotions, and our teachers meet each child with patience, warmth, and a deep understanding of early development. Children feel safe to try, tumble, and try again—knowing a caring adult is always close by.

Our toddler preschool program is active, hands-on, and intentionally flexible. Two-year-olds learn best by doing, so each day includes:

Imaginative Play:
Children dive into simple pretend play—feeding baby dolls, marching like animals, or “planting” seeds—building early language and cooperation skills.

Art & Sensory Exploration:
Painting with big brushes, squishing dough, and exploring textures help develop fine motor skills and creativity.

Music & Movement:
Singing, dancing, and marching give toddlers a healthy outlet for their energy while introducing rhythm, listening, and simple directions.

Short, Playful Group Times:
Brief circle times focus on greeting friends, naming colors or feelings, and practicing taking turns—always kept short and engaging.

Gentle Guidance for Growing Independence

At two, children are learning to express themselves—and that can come with strong emotions. Our teachers use consistent routines and calm, loving guidance to help toddlers feel secure as they test boundaries. Snacks, stories, outdoor play, and rest happen around the same times each day, helping children know what to expect. With at least two teachers and just 10 children in the Twos room (a 1:5 ratio), we’re able to give each child the one-on-one support and encouragement they need during tough moments—and plenty of attention for celebrating every new skill.

Outdoor Play & Room to Move

Our twos have daily access to a private, fenced-in playground that’s shady, sandy, and designed just for young children. With wagons to pull, safe slides to climb, and plenty of space to run, children can explore and burn energy in a natural setting. The entire play area is covered with soft sand—perfect for digging, scooping, and imaginary play—so there’s no need for a separate sandbox. Kids enjoy hands-on fun, fresh air, and outdoor adventures every day, all under the watchful care of their teachers.

Supporting Potty Learning—At Your Child’s Pace

Potty training is not required in our Twos class. We understand that readiness looks different for every child, and teachers work closely with families to support potty learning when your child begins to show interest. Our goal is to make this transition calm and pressure-free, just like the rest of the day.

Learning Happens Through Play

Parents often wonder if two-year-olds “really learn” in preschool. In our Twos class, play is learning. Through songs, stories, pretend scenarios, and everyday routines, children build vocabulary, follow simple directions, and begin understanding concepts like animals, weather, and community. Many families notice a big jump in language, confidence, and social skills after just a few months.

Is the Twos Class Right for Your Child?

If you’re looking for a toddler preschool program in Raleigh that understands active children, supports big feelings, and values play-based learning, our 2-year-old class may be the perfect fit. With small groups, caring teachers, and lots of room to move, children grow from curious toddlers into confident preschoolers—one joyful day at a time.
