Pre-K Program for 4-Year-Olds—Ready for Kindergarten, Ready for Life

Academics Aligned with NC Standards
Our Pre-K (4s) class is the capstone year of early learning at Temple Beth Or Preschool. Designed to build every skill your child needs for kindergarten through our play-based curriculum as well as literacy and math curriculums. Our Pre-K offers a 5-day-a-week morning, play-based program that prepares children both academically and socially. Each day mirrors the routine and expectations of “big school,” so children enter kindergarten excited, confident, and well-prepared.
Literacy:
Our Pre-K uses Letterland—the same phonics program taught in
Wake County public schools—so children are introduced to letters, sounds, and sight words in a way that feels familiar and fun. By year’s end, many can write their names and recognize common words.
Math:
Kids count beyond 20, spot patterns, and practice simple addition and subtraction with hands-on manipulatives. Math is everywhere: from measuring during cooking projects to counting blocks in a tower.
Fine Motor Skills:
Cutting, drawing, and writing are practiced through engaging activities—preparing every child for a successful start in
kindergarten.
Social, Emotional, and Leadership Growth
Our Pre-K is about more than ABCs—here, children learn to solve small problems with peers, express their feelings, and take responsibility. Four-year-olds take on leadership roles (like line leader or class helper), and sometimes buddy with younger classes to practice kindness and empathy. They work on conflict resolution, self-advocacy, and classroom jobs that build independence and pride.
Values, Traditions, and Character
Each month, the class explores a universal value—such as bravery, kindness, or generosity—often connected to a story, project, or charitable act (like collecting items for a local drive). Children participate in Shabbat songs, holiday celebrations, and classroom traditions that nurture character and community, in a way that’s inclusive for all families.
Small Class Sizes, Big Opportunities
With a maximum of 16 children and two teachers in the Pre-K room (1:8 ratio), every child receives plenty of individual attention and encouragement. Teachers tailor support to help both shy and outgoing children find their voice, try new things, and grow in confidence before they head off to kindergarten.
Results You Can See—Ready for Kindergarten and Beyond
Teachers in local kindergartens often note how well TBOP graduates adapt and excel. Families regularly share that their children left Pre-K not only reading and counting, but also feeling confident, independent, and eager to learn.
A Joyful, Not-So-Serious Approach to Serious Learning
We know four-year-olds learn best when they’re having fun. TBOP’s Pre-K strikes the right balance between structure and joy: kids learn through games, themed units (“space week,” animal adventures), creative projects, and plenty of laughter. They finish the year not only kindergarten-ready, but with a lifelong love of learning.
